No longer a rare disease among birds in the US, the West Nile Virus is a continuing threat to endangered bird species in North America as well as humans. Since arriving at our shores almost 13 years ago, it's claimed the lives of several hundred people and an untold number of animals. With almost zero chance of survival once infected for some bird species, scientists like Joanne Young believe a vaccine might be the best hope of preventing extinction of rarer birds.
Hence the news of the West Nile vaccine developed at the University of British Columbia is quite encouraging. Initial tests proved promising and will hopefully not only stop the spread of the virus among birds but also to other animal species.
